Ipswich Brothers fell just short of mounting a remarkable comeback and went down 32-30 to WestBrisbane Panthers in their Round 2 SEQ Women’s Studdy’s Division 1 game at the weekend.

It was a poor start for the home side Brothers who trailed 26-0 at the halftime break after the Panthers put in a clinical first half performance.

Led up front by Jillaroos representative Heather Ballinger who was playing at lock, the Panthers were able to exploit a number of defensive errors on their way to the line.

Although they had a first round bye – there was no rust on the Panthers early, and fellow international rep Renae Kunst also got her name on the score card after showing some good footwork at the line to step over untouched left of the sticks after her side had earned themselves a goal-line drop-out.

They scored twice more in the half, with a super pass to the outside to the wing helping to their halftime lead.

Brothers had to be the first to score in the second half and they didn’t wait long to do it, with Belinda Brown crashing over in the first minute of play resuming.

That filled them with confidence and they quickly went back-to-back when a kick through from the halfback was supported by a good chase and winger Courtney Robinson went over to peg back the deficient.

The comeback clearly rattled the Panthers with multiple errors cruelling their efforts to shut down the fightback of Brothers.

A great solo try from Amelia Kuk came for the home side after the Panthers turned over the ball after the defence put immense pressure on the halves, forcing Wests to put the ball down.

With 29 minutes to go, with was Wests leading 26-18 – but then Brothers scored another try remarkably see the scores narrow to 26-24.

After working their way back into the half, the Panthers were able to earn themselves back-to-back sets with a line drop out with 11 minutes remaining on the clock.

However, they could not capitalise and after giving up a scrum to Brothers, they were made to pay when the home side were able to hit the lead for the first time with a try. The successful conversion then gave them a 30-26 lead with less than minutes left in the game.

While they had been outplayed for the majority of the half, there was still enough class in the Wests team to make sure they played right to the end, and in a tense final few moments, they were able to get one back to lock the scores at 30-30 after crossing I the left corner.

Under immense pressure, halfback Lana Sheedy was able to slot the vital conversion to give her side the competition points after securing the 32-30 win in a hectic match.
