ROUND 9 PREVIEW

Ipswich Jets v Burleigh Bears
North Ipswich Reserve on Saturday, April 29 - 3pm
Referee:
Tim Rutherford

Although the Ipswich Jets are currently enjoying a resurgence in form – this week’s opponents Burleigh have proven to be a ‘bogey team’ in recent seasons. The Jets have lost their past five games to the Bears – after previously winning the five games played before that run. The side have also struggled at home this season and have lost their last three at the North Ipswich Reserve. The Bears are in 11th place on the ladder, but that does not reflect the closeness of most of their games so far this season. Last weekend however, there was little they could do to stop a red-hot PNG Hunters side who thrilled the fans on their way to a 42-6 win in their annual Anzac weekend clash. In milestone news, Jim Lenihan passed Gary O'Brien (152) to move to fifth play for most Cup games coached.

PNG Hunters v Northern Pride
National Football Stadium on Saturday, April 29 - 3pm
Referee:
Michael Gordon
Head-to-Head: Pride 3 PNG 2
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #PNGvPRIDE

The PNG Hunters camp is happy and confident following a strong performance against the Burleigh Bears last weekend. However, the star of the match Adex Wera – who scored four tries in the 42-6 victory – is out of this game having taken an early guilty plea for a dangerous throw. However, coach Michael Marum has named a 20-man squad for this game so will have a number of options to make up for his absence.  The Pride head to Port Moresby with confidence as well after the held on to claim a hard-fought win over Norths at Bishop Park last weekend. The Pride – who had two players named earlier this week in the XXXX Queensland Residents team – hold a 3-2 head-to-head advantage over the Hunters and actually won the first game between these two sides in Kokopo. However, the remaining four games have been won by the home team.

Easts Tigers v CQ Capras
Suzuki Stadium, Langlands Park on Saturday, April 29 - 5pm
Referee:
Liam Kennedy (50th game)
Head-to-Head: Easts 29 Central 9 Drawn 2

While Easts easily hold the upper hand against the Capras (the CQ side have only won one of the past nine games between these 2 sides) – they will know not to be complacent heading into this match. Last weekend, the Tigers headed up to Mackay as heavy favourites – but returned home having been outplayed by their unfancied rivals. While Easts have won their past four home games, the Capras will take positives from the fact the side were able to secure a draw when they met at Suzuki Stadium (Langlands Park) last year – but have been dealt a double-blow at the judiciary this week. Both Nathan Bassani (one match) and Chanel Seigafo (three games) have been punished for shoulder charges. Tigers skipper Jake Foster will lace on the boots for his 50th Cup game (all Easts) this Saturday as well.

Wynnum Manly Seagulls v Townsville Blackhawks
BMD Kougari Oval on Saturday, April 29 - 6pm
Referee:
Jarrod Cole
Head-to-Head: Townsville 2 Wynnum 0
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #WYNvTSVB
Live Stream: Seagulls TV

The Wynnum Manly will be desperate to make a statement against the Blackhawks in what will be the first game between these two sides at BMD Kougari Oval. The Seagulls have lost their past five games and their last three at home; while Townsville have enjoyed a good run on the road, winning six of their past seven matches away from home. This week, the Seagulls will also reveal a new jersey design for the team. Despite not being named in the Tuesday team list, popular winger Peter Gubb is expected to make his return from suspension. Fresh from inking a two-year deal with the NQ Cowboys, Blackhawks fullback Carlin Anderson is on the cusp of cracking 100 points for the season, following a 20-point haul against Tweed Heads last weekend which saw him end the round on 92 points.

Mackay Cutters v Norths Devils
BB Print Stadium Mackay on Sunday, April 30 – 1.40pm* (Live on Channel 9 QLD)
Referee:
Chris Anderson
Assistant Referee: Dan Munroe
Head-to-Head: Norths 11 Mackay 8
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #MCvDEVILS

The Channel 9 cameras head to Mackay for the first time this season for what should be an entertaining match between the Cutters and the Devils. Mackay will be on a high after earning themselves a great upset win over Easts Tigers last weekend in front of their home fans. Young halfback Cooper Bambling enjoyed his time on the field, scoring a try and slotting four conversions – as well as booting a 73rd minute field goal for good measure. While the Devils have been struggling to find a win of late – they just went down 22-20 to Pride last weekend – they have won the past three games between these two sides. However, the Cutters have won five of the past six games against the Devils when they have been played in Mackay – although Norths won there last year.

Redcliffe Dolphins v Souths Logan Magpies
Dolphin Oval on Sunday, April 30 - 2pm
Referee:
Gavin Reynolds
Head-to-Head: Redcliffe 29 Souths Logan 10 Drawn 1
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #PHINSvSLM

As part of their 70th year celebrations – the Dolphins will this weekend unveil a special jersey to commemorate the milestone. The jersey will feature the names of the club’s 720 top-tier players in a design that will use the same colours and style as the original. Last weekend, the Phins hit back from an 18-0 deficit after 10 minutes to post a 46-28 win over the Falcons. Dynamic half Christian Hazard has been rewarded for his early season form with a spot on the bench for the XXXX Queensland Residents and also scored a late hat-trick for his side in last weekend’s win. The Magpies come off second best in an entertaining match against the Jets last weekend, their first loss in five matches. However, while they go into this match know that the Dolphins have won the past four times they have met at Dolphin Oval, the Magpies have won their past three, and six of their past seven games away from home. In team news, Redcliffe prop Matt Lodge will miss this game after an early guilty plea for a careless high tackle.

Tweed Heads Seagulls v Sunshine Coast Falcons
Piggabeen Sports Complex on Sunday, April 30 - 2pm
Referee:
Nick Pelgrave
Assistant Referee: Ben Watts
Head-to-Head: Tweed 11 Sunshine Coast 5
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #THSvSCF

Seagulls co-captain Sam Meskell will run out for his 100th Cup game this weekend in a match his club will be desperate to win. Meskell – who previously played with derby rivals Burleigh – will need to be at his best if his side are to overcome a Falcons team who will be looking to make amends following a heavy loss to Redcliffe last week. After showing some promising signs against the Devils to post their opening win in Round 7, the Seagulls were no match for a fired-up Townsville last weekend, going down 48-18 – despite only trailing 12-6 at halftime. The Falcons were also only down a converted try in their game at the break before stumbling to a 48-28 loss. While the Gulls have a strong record against the Falcons – winning five of the past six games – they have not enjoyed playing at home in recent times and have lost their past seven games at Piggabeen.

*This weekend, the Seagulls will pay tribute to flood victims of Murwillumbah with part of the gate takings and money raised from donations, being given to the rugby league clubs in Murwillumbah that were badly affected by the recent floods. There will also be a raffle held on the day with prizes that include a signed and framed Gold Coast Titans jersey. Head to the club’s website for more details.
