Putting aside a disappointing FOGs Under 20s Cup campaign, Ipswich got off on the right foot in the FOGS Colts Challenge; posting a close 18-16 win over Wynnum Manly in their Round 1 match.

“I was really happy with the way we competed and wee defended our line really well,” Jets coach Adam Boettcher said.

“Our tackles were a little bit clunky, so there’s a little bit room for improvement there, but I’m really happy with the way the boys went about their business and competed very hard.”

The Jets saw tries to David Iopu, Ethan Pringle and Shar Walden and in addition to his four-pointer, Walden was also successful with all three of his conversion attempts.

Sheldon Smith, Tyson Smith and Sam Ballinger were the try-scorers for the Seagulls, with Smith also landing two conversions.

Despite finishing last on the competition ladder for the shortened 20s competition which was eventually won by Redcliffe, Boettcher is hoping those games provided a learning experience for his team.

The previous competition was also a chance for him to experiment with his team lineups.

“To be blunt, it was more used for as a trial for us and we played a number of different guys in a number of different positions, so we were always going to be far more competitive come the season proper,” Boettcher said.

“We gave some guys a chance to prove themselves at that level, so we’ve strengthened the squad if anything, and of there are guys that are needed to be called up.

“They are now going to be at a better position to play at that level.”

Now, the Jets will prepare for another big challenge on Saturday and will host the Western Mustangs at North Ipswich Reserve.

“We are very wary of Toowoomba,” Boettcher said. “They love to place Ipswich, Ipswich loves to play Toowoomba, so it’s always a very tough game.

“We’ll be preparing as normal, but we know that they have threats right across the park and they’re a tough team full of country boys, so it’ll be a cracking game.”

The Jets v Mustangs match will kick off at 11.30am.

Elsewhere, the Wynnum Manly Seagulls will visit Pizzey Park on Sunday to take on the Burleigh Bears at 3.45pm.
