The junior Gold Coast Vikings claimed back-to-back Hill-Stumer Championship trophies with another impressive campaign during the Division’s junior age carnival at the Norths Ipswich Reserve last weekend.

Gold Coast were undefeated in the Under 13 grade and lost only two halves over three games in the Under 14s.

The carnival is also the selection trials for the SEQ Under 14s representative team. The Division named a squad of 44 players to participate in a weekend training camp at the Runaway Bay Sports Centre from Saturday, May 27 to Sunday, May 28.

In the Under 13 game on Saturday morning, the Vikings signalled their intentions to dominate the Ipswich team in all facets and won 44-6.

In the Under 14s, the home side pushed the Gold Coast who led 10-0 at halftime, and again both teams worked hard in the second half for the final 16-4 victory to the Vikings.

Brisbane Red blitzed their Grey counterparts with a surprisingly easy 42-6 win. Winger Mustafa Kaya crossed for a hat-trick.

In the afternoon, Red’s margin at halftime was only 10-0 over the Gold Coast, but with more possession – it was the Vikings that recorded an exciting 22-24 victory.

In another exciting clash, Brisbane Grey led Ipswich 12-6 at the break and then held an 18-16 advantage before an Ipswich penalty on the fulltime siren.

The long-range attempt by the Diggers hit the cross-bar which resulted in a scramble for the football for Grey to hang onto the match points.

On Sunday, Gold Coast skipped away to a 10-0 advantage at halftime, but in a championship effort – Brisbane Grey dominated the second term to win by 12-10 in a thriller.

Brisbane Red had to claim all available match points from their clash against Ipswich, and after a slender 8-0 advantage at halftime, Red went on with the job in the second stanza to win 20-0. This victory handed Brisbane Red the Under 14s SEQ title.

With a total points tally of 30 from a maximum of 36 points, the Gold Coast clinched a deserved Hill-Stumer trophy to cap a good weekend.

In a real highlight for the players and crowd, local stalwart Merv Stumer was on hand to assist RL Ipswich Chair Jack Rhea present the trophies and awards to the players and officials of the winning groups.

With the QRL deciding to not continue the Under 13 age group at the State Carnival, the Division is instead funding a development camp in this age with 40 players selected from the weekend of games to attend the camp to participate in on-field training as well as education programs.

This year’s TJS QRL Carnival will be hosted at the Sunshine Coast from Wednesday, June 28 to Sunday, July 2.
