Despite the slippery conditions on Saturday night; Marley Brown Oval was the home of what the CQ Capras coach Kim Williams called his squad's best defensive display of the season so far, as they beat the Northern Pride 10-4.

“It was a very tough effort by both teams, particularly in the second half,” Williams said.

“There was a lot of dew on the ground, so there were a (few) dropped balls in the first half and in the second half there were no more tries because of the good defence than anything else.”

Ken Tofilau and Justin Tavae both scored for the ‘home’ side who had taken this weekend’s game to Gladstone, with Cody Grills scoring the only conversion of the game.

For the Pride, Marcus Jensen made it across the line for his side’s only points for the evening.

The result could not have come at a better time for the Capras, with the victory leapfrogging them over their Northern Pride rivals.

While the wins have been hard to come by for the Capras this season, Williams believes his team's effort of late is a sign that they are improving when it comes to keeping the pressure on their opponents.

“We’ve always known we have a good squad together, but we had a lot of new guys in this year, and it’s just taken a little bit longer to gel than I would have hoped,” Williams said.

“The senior playing group has probably changed quite a bit from this season compared to last, and they’re just understanding their role in the team.

“I think they’ve really been leading the way over the last couple of weeks.”

According to Williams, his relatively young squad is now beginning to realise they can be competitive in this year's Intrust Super Cup and hopes they can carry that attitude going forward.

“It’s that little bit of belief and a strong work ethic that goes with that, and I think they’re starting to display that at the moment,” Williams said.

“It’s something that we need to continue with as we have two more games until a bye, and if we can get two wins going into that bye, we’ll be somewhere on the brink of a Top 6 or pretty close to it. We’ve got something to build on for the last 10 rounds or so.”

The Capras will now prepare for their Round 13 matchup against the Tweed Heads Seagulls on Sunday at Browne Park in the Channel 9 TV game kicking off at 1.40 pm.

The Pride will look to bounce back when they take on Easts Tigers Saturday, at home at Barlow Park.
