Handed a 44-0 football lesson by the Bears last week; the Ipswich Jets bounced back to record a 40-14 win over Tweed Heads in their Round 17 match.

It was a good come back from the side who were held to zero last weekend for the first time in 20 years.

The Jets started the game well and scored in the ninth minute when they went left and captain Dane Phillips turned Nemani Valekapa back under towards the defence; running straight at the Seagulls.

While Wes Conlon missed the conversion; he scored a try of his own two minutes later after the Seagulls’ fumbled a kick placed into the corner and the home side led 10-0 after 11 minutes.

In a 16-minute stretch (from the 23rd minute to the 39th minute) Michael Purcell took his season tally to 16 tries with hat-trick before half time for the second time this season.

Purcell’s first was on the back of an inside ball from Phillips that showed his pure speed.

However, he had to wait for his second and third; with Tweed Heads halfback crossing the line for his team in the 27th minute after the Gulls placed Purcell under pressure and he came up with a spilt ball.

Purcell was back on the score sheet when he combined with Phillips, and he had another just before halftime after Valekapa attacked down the Jets’ left and executed a beautiful pass for Purcell to spectacularly place the ball inside the corner post.

At the break; the Jets had completed 18 sets compared to the Tweed’s 11 and that extra ball was shown in the 26-6 score line.

At halftime, Ipswich co-coaches Ben and Shane Walker called for more ball movement and warned their side to be wary of the danger presented by Eddy Pettybourne.

The tries dried up early in the second half for both sides; however; the Seagulls attempted a fightback with John Olive crossing over to score after the Seagulls ran the ball on the last tackle and he was able to get through on the right hand side.

They had another only minutes later – this time in the opposite corner when they kicked for the left and Tevita Folau scored and after 64 minutes; it was 26-14.

A Conlon penalty goal gave the Jets more breathing space and they had a 28-14 lead with six minutes to play.

The Jets then added to their tally when Conlon competed his double, stepping his way through some tired defence in the 77th minutes; while Sam Martin brought up his 25th try for the Jets after barging his way over to give his side a comprehensive 40-14 win.

The Jets will take on the Magpies next week while the Tweed will have the bye.
