Last year's Queensland Under 16 team were a little "nervous and overawed" in their narrow loss to the Blues, and the key to success tonight was for the boys to remain calm so they can play their natural games, coach Kurt Richards told QRL TV from camp.

"We just need to be on our game and ... defend really well and try to shut down them out wide and we'll go close to getting a result," Richards said.

The U16s kick off at Suncorp Stadium at 5.50pm tonight as a curtain-raiser to the State of Origin decider.
