The QCCS Mackay Cutters celebrated their 10th anniversary in style with a strong victory against the CQ Capras.

The Cutters produced one of their most dominant displays of the season in front of a bumper crowd at BB Print Stadium, as players past and present witnessed the 38-20 triumph over their traditional rivals.

Skipper Andrew Davey got Mackay’s scoring started as he scooped up a perfect grubber kick off the boot of Cooper Bambling.

Braden Uele was next, with the big man cutting back in against the Capras goal-line defenders to double his side’s lead.

Yamba Bowie collected an over-the-head pass from his inside man to bag Mackay’s third try before the Capras finally managed to respond, with Nathan Bassani bursting through the Cutters defence from dummy half to give his team some life.

Mackay’s right edge combined for their next try, with Bowie flicking a pass to Nathan Saumalu who lost the ball behind himself, before Bowie scooped it back up and found Johnny Faletagoa’I who crossed untouched.

Some ill-discipline from the hosts gave the Capras excellent field position, and swift ball movement saw Bassani bag his second try of the night as he latched onto a sweeping backline play to have his team trailing by 12 points at halftime.

Tensions simmered after the break with some pushing and shoving, but it was the Cutters who let their football do the talking. They produced some massive tackling, forcing a line dropout from the Capras before Aaron Booth muscled his way over to add to the growing list of Mackay try scorers.

Maipele Moseau got the Capras moving again, somehow coming up with the ball as it deflected into the Mackay in-goal, before the Cutters put on a dazzling back-of-the-scrum play, with Bambling handling the ball twice in a magnificent set play before sending Jack Joass away to score on the left flank.

Oliver Percy showed his strength in spinning out of a tackle to crash over for the Capras, but it was all in vain as Bowie sent Saumalu away to score in the final minute of the contest to cap off a dominant performance for the Cutters.

Mackay coach Steve Sheppard was happy with his team’s performance post-match amid the Cutters’ 10-year celebrations.

“I think it’s great for the community and the club,” Sheppard said. “We’ve worked hard over these last 10 years and there’s of lot of old boys and old supporters here tonight and I think that effort was good.”

The win leaves the Cutters on the cusp of the Intrust Super Cup’s top six and a potential finals berth, something ‘Pup’ warily acknowledged.

“We’ve got PNG next week … so we’ll go over there and try and ambush them and put them off their game from the get go.

“We’ve got an opportunity to make the finals now, if we keep winning and a bit of luck goes our way, but it’s up to us.”

The Capras will take their home game to Bear Park, Clermont as part of next week’s Get in the Game Country Week round and will face the Dolphins.
