A talented North Queensland United out defeated Queensland Outback 58-10 in last Sunday’s representative match at Barlow Park in Cairns.
After a scrappy opening, Queensland Outback made the most of their opportunities to lead 10-6 after 20 minutes through tries to Brent Hearne and Chris Gelhaar.
Gabirel Bon had scored United’s only points in this period and a tight game appeared to be on the cards.
But from this point on, NQ United players clicked into gear with three more tries handing them an 18-10 lead at the half-time break.
In the second-half, United captain Windor Bowie from the NPA led from the front and was supported well by fellow Northern Peninsula players Trevor Nona and Charlie Sagigi.
Torres Strait Island based players Remus Phineasa, Isiah Wigness and man of the match Gabriel Bon then went on a try-scoring blitz in the second half as North Queensland United ran out winners 58-10.
At no stage did the Outback players give up as they tried hard right through to the end with Khan Ladbrock taking out the Queensland Outback player of the match award for a terrific 80 minute effort.
United captain Bowie was presented the Skytrans Trophy in front of a large crowd prior to the NQ Cowboys v South Sydney NRL game.
“It was by far the largest crowd any of these players would have played in front of and both sides and the Queensland Rugby League are grateful for the wonderful opportunity provided to them by the Cairns District Rugby League and the South Sydney Rabbitohs,” QRL Northern Division manager Scott Nosworthy said.
