The school calendar sees a large number of players take part in school-based rugby league competitions across the state.

The Brisbane Broncos and North Queensland Cowboys sponsor major schoolboys competition in the state across varying age groups; including the FOXTEL Langer Trophy (Broncos) and Aaron Payne Cup (Cowboys).

These two 18 years competitions serve as a lead-in tournament to rank schools to contest the GIO Cup (the National Schoolboy Competition).

The Broncos-sponsored competitions feature all age divisions and in 2017 have partnered with media outlet FOXTEL.

The separate competitions have been named in tribute to some of the Broncos finest players: Renouf, Hancock, Walters, De Vere and Gee. The Broncos Old Boys support the Year 7 competition.

The FOXTEL Langer Trophy is a high-quality, round-robin competition featuring the top rugby league schools in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Teams taking part in the competition are; Marsden SHS, Wavell SHS, Ipswich SHS, Palm Beach Currumbin SHS, Keebra Park SHS,  and Coombabah SHS.

The Gold Coast Titans sponsor a much-needed regular competition for “grassroots” schools on the South Coast. These schools are unable to compete at the elite level, but still wish to play the great game of rugby league.

A southern conference pathway to the GIO Cup has been created to enter the winning schools from Titans Cup and regional competitions through elimination games leading towards entry in the quarter final rounds.

These schools will progress to the Queensland GIO Cup finals series against the ranked schools form the Foxtel Langer Trophy from the southern conference.

The North Queensland Cowboys’ Aaron Payne Cup competition aims to provide participants with regular, quality competition and encourage future participation in rugby league at state and national levels. It is round robin competition, with each school playing each other once.

These games are played at central venues between Townsville, Mackay and Rockhampton.

Teams from Townsville (Kirwan SHS, Ignatius Park College, Mackay; Mackay SHS, St Teresa’s College (Abergowie), St Patrick’s College) and teams from Rockhampton (St Brendan’s College, Emmaus College, The Cathedral College) compete to determine which schools will progress to the Queensland GIO Cup finals series from the northern conference.
