Local leagues across Central Division will be the direct beneficiary of a new partnership between the Division and the Australian Training Company from January next year.

Under the proposed plan, local leagues will be given the option to host school-based trainees completing Business Administration certificate courses.

The trainees are available to work one-day-per-week during the term of their traineeship and part of their education is to complete weekly administrative tasks for the local league.

Program coordinator and QRL Operations Manager Jodie Teys indicated the program has run with great success in other areas and the support of trainees assists in alleviating the growing concern of volunteer shortage in local league areas.

“The Toowoomba Rugby League have used school based trainees for a number of years and the work they complete whilst training certainly eases the burden on volunteer executive,” Teys said.

“The program is optional, so it is up to the local league area to determine whether they see value in hosting a trainee and for the Division, the real benefit is the community links this program creates between rugby league and local schools.”

“Providing meaningful education for young people is high on the agenda for all communities and if rugby league can assist with this, while at the same time ease the burden on volunteers, then it is a positive outcome for both parties.”

Australian Training Company Account Manager Tony Quinn said the business has a long history with rugby league and are aware of the administrative needs of a local league.

“We were formally the Australian Rugby League Training Company and still have strong links to the game by providing sport and recreation trainees through the NRL,” Quinn said.

“Our trainees are fully supervised and both the host and the trainee are guided through the entire process by our staff.”

Quinn added that leagues would benefit with little to no cost due to the new partnership.

“The government incentives in place and the support provided through Central Division will mean that local leagues will potentially be able to benefit from the trainee program with little to no cost on them.”

Recruitment of trainees is expected to start during Term 4 of the school year with traineeships set to commence at the start of next year.

Local leagues in the Division who are looking to participate in the program should contact Jodie Teys on 0408 787 097 or j.teys@qrl.com.au.
