Intrust Super Cup Round 24 - Ipswich Jets tackle Bennet Leslie from Mackay Cutters at North Ipswich Reserve on Saturday, August 19, 2017 - Picture: Richard Walker

Ipswich had an unbeaten record on Jets Old Boys day - and they were hoping they could maintain that fact when they took on the Mackay Cutters at North Ipswich Reserve yesterday.

However, the Cutters proved too strong in the end, coming back in the second half to record a 30-20 win.

The game started at a slow pace with both teams probing away to find any weakness that could be exploited.

It took 15 minutes for Marion Seve to score after he was on the receiving end of some cross-field ball movement from left to right before he scored under the posts and the Jets led 6-0 after 15 minutes.

Ipswich captain Dane Phillips hoisted a bomb and was taken out after the kick. The Jets were offered the two points and gladly accepted for an 8-0 lead.

Mackay struck back in the 20th minute when some poor Jets’ handling was compounded by a poor read in defence and Bennett Leslie scored Mackay’s first try.

The Cutters went in front when a grubber kick was placed perfectly for Yamba Bowie who went in to score his 14th try this season.

The visitors were up 12-8 after 25 minutes and that was the score at halftime.

While the Jets had the better of the field position and attacking chances in their first half, they had only come away with one try while the Cutters had taken their chances when they were offered.

Mackay turned to the short kick again 12 minutes into the second half and it paid off for them again when Andrew Davey scored out wide on the left hand side.

Not long after, Davey was having an early shower when he was sent from the field for an upending tackle.

The Jets took full advantage of a 12-man Cutters outfit and Michael Purcell was in under the posts to score try number 22 for the season. The four-pointer cut the Cutters lead to 18-14 after 57 minutes.

In his Intrust Super Cup debut, youngster Julian Christian scored next to the posts for the Jet and now the home side were leading 20-18 with 15 minutes to play.

Mackay went back to the scene of the Jets’ poor defence in the first half and came away with a try again through Nicho Hynes to get the lead back 24-20 with 10 minutes left in the game.

The Cutters then sealed the win when Kouma Samson went in under the posts and a 30-20 win.

Next week, the Jets will take on the CQ Capras next week while the Cutters will play Souths.
