Northview outpoint Harris Fields

Northview have claimed this year’s NRL Development Cup grand final after outpointing Harris Fields 36-30 in a high scoring and entertaining game at Suncorp Stadium today.

The first score of the day came from Harris Fields fullback Malaela Su’a in the second minute of the game.

Harris Fields had kicked off to start the game, but got the ball back when an awkward bounce went in their favour.

However, in a seesawing match – Northview - who combined with four other local Mackay schools to make up their team - hit straight back in the left corner when Jett Wienert crossed the line. Their conversion was successful and they held a 6-4 lead.

They went further in front when they scored after a kick ahead deflected off Harris Fields who were trying to push it dead.

However, Su’a took it upon herself to get her team back into the game and made a massive run. She was over for her second, tightening the scores to 12-10.

There was more end-to-end action and Northview were over again when Wienert made an equally impressive run to score his second try.

The scores kept coming with the last try of the half going to Joshua Afamasaga with the successful conversion from Codey Trend seeing the scores 24-20 in favour of Northview.

The second half was much like the first with the teams trading tries and making long runs.

However, the defence worked harder and there were bigger tackles made with players from both sides trying to lift their teams.

The last two tries were indicative of the exciting game, with Will Shears from Northview nearly running the length of the field to get his side’s final try of the game.

Harris Fields though never gave up and Su’a got her third for the day with only a few moments left of the clock to see the scores finish at 36-30.

NORTHVIEW STATE SCHOOL 36 (Will Shears 3, Jett Wienert 2, Sam Wotherspoon tries; Timmy McEvoy, Riley Chamberlain, Bailey Cochrane, Jett Wienert, Jay King-Mann, Cayden Holley goals) def HARRIS FIELDS STATE SCHOOL 30 (Malaela Su’a 3, PJ Su’a 2, Joshua Afamasaga tries; Brandon Burgess, Nevaeh Ese, Codey Trend goals) at Suncorp Stadium.
