Statewide score wrap: Emus' special day inspires united effort for big results

Emu Park's A grade teams took inspiration from Anzac commemorations to rise to hard-fought wins in the Rockhampton A grade competition on Sunday.

The Emus have become known for their annual event - an extension of the community's commemorations president Jason Field said was well supported by the locals and created fantastic atmosphere.

"It was a great day, a lot of ANZACs and the Emu Park RSL was involved and supported the club again," he said.

"We're just a small community and we get around everything. Anzac Day at Emu Park is very big, (the town) has a beautiful monument thanks to the local Livingstone Shire Council and I think they get about 5000 people to our dawn service, which is massive for the region.

"I think because of that and the community being involved in the marches from kids coming through, it's just something we wanted to continue as a club to support.

"The guys from the RSL love being involved and getting around it and around the footy club and watching the guys play, so there's respect both ways in terms of supporting each other and especially what they did for the community and the country."

After a morning of the club's growing junior talent on show, Emu Park's women started the senior footy off with an 8-0 shutout of Brothers Rockhampton.

The day came to a crescendo with the men's game, which ended in a 34-20 win to the home side.

Field said he had never seen such togetherness from the men's A grade team as he did on Saturday, driving the result.

"There were a lot of good players. It was probably the best team effort I've seen them play together as a unit, so I was very proud of them all," he said.

"The club and the players really get around it and I think you could see their fight and their grit at points where they banded together and come through the back end with that effort that got us the win.

"I was super proud of them and I just said to them after the game it's probably the best we've played as a team for the whole 80 minutes, especially knowing the side we were coming up against was a very good side."

Field said if the teams kept that up, there was no reason they couldn't dream of going one step further in 2024 and avenging for their respective grand final defeats last season.

The Rockhampton senior competitions will pause over the coming long weekend for the annual Reef v Beef representative clash, which will go a long way to deciding who will make the cut for the Rockhampton Rustlers at the XXXX 47th Battalion carnival in July.
