QRL Media Release - QAS Emerging Origin Squad 2016 (January 12 - 2016)

New XXXX Maroons coach Kevin Walters is excited about the opportunity to work with Queensland’s finest young talent at the QAS Emerging Origin Squad camp commencing in Brisbane this month.

Featuring players from 10 National Rugby League clubs, the 20-man squad will utilise the Queensland Sport & Athletics Centre (QSAC) facilities from January 29-31.

“It’s always good to bring young blood through pathway programs like these,” Walters said.

“Identifying that talent early, getting them in together and getting them around the camp environment is the main objective. Introducing them to the Origin staff in some capacity is another major benefit as well.

“We’re always eager to look at the next generation of players coming through and the best way to do it is through these camps.”

The 2016 squad includes premiership-winning North Queensland Cowboys hooker Jake Granville, a Central Queensland product who first shot to prominence with the Wynnum Manly Seagulls in the Intrust Super Cup.

“He’s had a couple of good years at the Broncos and was a really dominant player for the Cowboys last year so we thought it was time to introduce him to the squad as well,” Walters said.

“We’re very well positioned there at hooker if Cameron Smith is unavailable for whatever reason.

“We’ve got some good young talent coming through. Jake Friend from the Roosters is another one who has been in the system for two or three years now so it was probably time we introduced more of our Queensland talent to the program.”

Walters said the Emerging Squad was a “great concept” that had played a pivotal role in Queensland’s Origin success over many years.

“Most of them have played some sort of junior rep football or they know each other, but it’s nice to get them all together,” he said.

“It’s good for the coaches as well, and for myself personally to meet them all and see their different personalities and different traits because at the end of the day we’d like to see them come through and eventually play Origin.”

QAS Under 20 2016 squad - (QRL story - January 6, 2016)

The Queensland Academy of Sport Under 20s extended squad has been named, with Broncos-contracted players dominating the 26-man list.

Eleven players named in the squad have Broncos contracts, with Cowboys and Storm players also well represented, including rising Cowboys star Kalyn Ponga.

Five of the squad made Intrust Super Cup appearances in 2015 as well as being contracted to their respective NRL clubs. Michael Molo and Josh Fauid ran on for Norths Devils, with George Fai representing Souths Logan, Sam Smith the CQ Capras and Coen Hess the Mackay Cutters.

Six players are returning from last year's Queensland Under 20s team that lost to NSW and eight players are stepping up from the victorious 2015 Queensland Under 18s squad, including Jaydn Su'A.

Coach Kurt Wrigley says the team's representative experience will be a bonus.

"I'm confident we can get this group up to standard because we have a lot of the guys backing up from last year's Under 20s and they'll have a little hurt from that," he said.

"I've got more time with them at the camp this year, so I'm really looking forward to working with this team."

QRL Media Release - December 16, 2014 - announcing the 2015 squads

The Queensland Rugby League’s successful QAS program will undergo a transformation next year, with the revamping of the junior development squad and an expansion of the existing Emerging Origin Squad.

The Queensland State of Origin Emerging Squad (formerly referred to as the senior Emerging Squad) will grow from 14 to 18 players in 2015; while the Emerging Maroons Squad will take the place of the Junior Emerging Squad.

Consisting of a mix of eligible Under 20 players, recent NYC graduates and players with both second-tier (Intrust Super Cup) and NRL experience – this new squad represents a broadening of the talent that can be found in Queensland and will provide yet another pathway opportunity for players.

Blake Leary (Manly Sea Eagles), Shaun Nona (Melbourne Storm), Javid Bowen and Patrick Kaufusi (both North Queensland Cowboys) were all part the NRL State Championship winning Northern Pride team this year; while Storm / Easts duo Cameron Munster and Hymel Hunt both played for the Tigers in the loss to the Pride in the Queensland final.

Having performed consistently for a number of seasons as part of the North Queensland Cowboys back row; Gavin Cooper has been given his first opportunity to take part in the Queensland State of Origin Emerging Squad helmed by QAS rugby league director Wayne Bennett and current XXXX Maroons coach Mal Meninga.

He will be joined by fellow debutants Tim Glasby (Melbourne / Easts), Corey Thompson (Bulldogs), Tautau Moga (Cowboys), Brisbane halfback and new Kangaroo Ben Hunt and NRL grand final winning Rabbitoh Dave Tyrrell as the new faces in the senior program.

Both training camps will take place at the Queensland Academy of Sport in January next year.
