Southern Suburbs will meet Kangaroos in the 2013 Bendigo Bank Cairns District Rugby League A Grade Grand Final after romping to a 64-6 win over Yarrabah Seahawks in their Preliminary Final at Barlow Park on Sunday.

Favourites Suburbs were on fire against the Seahawks, crossing for 11 tries, with Cephas Chinfat, Rickki Sutherland and Johnny Whittle all scoring doubles, the latter also landing seven goals for a personal tally of 22 points.

Suburbs coach Billy Beard praised his sides overall display and particularly their defence, for restricting Yarrabahs free-flowing style of footy.

I thought our attitude was great, and that was the key to our success, said Beard.

We turned up in defence, and that showed with the number of forced errors made by Yarrabah.

Having said that, you still need to execute at the other end to put points on the board, and I thought we did that well too.

There were a couple of little lapses which we need to work on and that we cant afford to make against Roos, but overall Ive got to be happy.

Beard also reserved praise for the Seahawks, who had an outstanding season culminating in thrilling finals victories over Mareeba and Brothers.

Theyve come a long way this year, and its been wonderful to see, said Beard.

They dont have a lot of players with Northern Pride or Foley Shield experience, but they play their hearts out and have a wonderful supporter base.

Suburbs will now meet minor premiers Kangaroos for the third time in four weeks, after losing in Round 22 and in their semi-final clash a fortnight ago.

The Gordonvale club will be searching for their first CDRL premiership since 1997, having lost in the decider in 2003 and 2011.

Beard encouraged all rugby league fans in Cairns southern corridor to get down to Barlow Park this Sunday and help his side to glory.

Its going to be a massive day, with the Pride playing their home semi and all the CDRL Grand Finals, said Beard.

It would be amazing to see people not only from Gordonvale but across Cairns southern suburbs to be there on Sunday and give us the support which might help us get across the line.

In the other Preliminary Finals on the weekend, Ivanhoes (C Grade), Innisfail (Under 18s), and Yarrabah (Reserve Grade) all progressed to their respective Grand Finals.
