There could be no doubt, following the events of the past few weeks, of the benefit of the contribution of the Men of League organisation, and it’s particularly timely with the recent Heritage Round to acknowledge the wonderful work this organisation does.

And Central Highlanders do not have to go far to support the good work of the organisation with the local branch, formed in 2012, continuing to assist a number of Central Highland players who have had, through injury or illness, a significant amount of time off work.

Like many organisations however, there are many fundraising ideas, and few hands to lead the way.  But lead the way they have with local communities supporting their efforts to host successful golf days in Emerald and the continuing success of the Battle of Mines, which pits local mines against one another in a day of challenging rugby league matches.

It is a highly anticipated and fiercely competed carnival, and a highly regarded trophy.  The Rio Tinto Clermont Coal Mine (pictured) were victorious last year, and look forward to defending the title in 2014.

However, 2014 will also see a change in the makeup of the executive of the CH Branch of the Men of League with founding member, and chairperson Andrew Lawrence leaving the area.

Executive member, Mick Roach thanked Andrew for his efforts during his time as chairperson, and said the organisation would be meeting in the next month to elect a new committee and begin planning for the 2014 Battle of the Mines.  “Mines outside the district have already expressed interest in taking part,” Roach said.
