Norths Tigers defeated Swifts Bluebirds 40-28 in the Ipswich Rugby League Mayor Paul Pisasale A-Grade Cup on Saturday.
Swifts showed their intentions early with hard relentless runs in the first set of the game.
Swifts hard running earned them a penalty when Norths tried to slow the play-the-ball speed.
Despite being penalised early, Norths began to dominate.
Five minutes into the game Norths had already gained a 10-0 lead after Brent Newton scored two tries for the Tigers.
When Matthew Fairhurst extended Norths’ lead to 14-0 after 12 minutes it looked like Swifts were in for a long night.
Swifts showed great determination to get back into the game when tries to Tele Salesa and Rendy Mam got the Bluebirds back within 2-points of Norths.
Tonga Mounga hit back for Norths in the 27th minute when he crashed over for a try from short-range to extend the Tigers’ lead to a converted try.
With 10 minutes until halftime, Brent Newton scored his third try of the game to give Norths a 24-12 lead.
Only 10 minutes into the second-half Norths’ lead had blown out to 24-points after quick tries to Gerico Cecil and Andrew Campbell.
With the game looking out of reach for Swifts some hope was restored when Mike Timai scored for the Bluebirds in the 60th minute.
In the 67th minute a backline play by Norths resulted in another try for Tonga Mounga to extend Norths’ lead to 40-18.
Swifts scored two late tries but it wasn’t enough to overcome a skilful Norths team as the Tigers ran out winners 40-28.
In the other Ipswich Rugby League Mayor Paul Pisasale A-Grade Cup round 16 games; Brothers defeated Goodna 19-12 and Fassifern defeated West End 42-8.
