Rugby league in the Central West will kick off with a bang on Saturday, March 21 with the third Annual Wren Cup being hosted at the Barcaldine Showground.

The Emerald Tigers will travel to Barcaldine to go head to head with the Sand Goannas on Saturday with a full day of family events planned.

The program includes Junior, Senior and Women’s games.  There are also free activities for kids, including face painting and jumping castles, which will help create the family friendly atmosphere.

Central West Rugby League Chairman Dave Kerrigan indicated that the event has grown considerably over the last couple of years and it is now a feature of the Central West calendar.

“It is a great event with plenty of action on and off the field.  We are entering the third year and on the field is one all between the two sides.  There should be plenty on the line between the two sides,” Kerrigan said.

“The footy is always great but this event is about much more than that.  Both sides commit each year to donating the profits from the event to Aged Care.  With a great crowd we are hopeful of making sizable donations to both Emerald’s Semita House and the Barcaldine Aged Care facility.”

Both communities are certainly well behind the event with local business from both town’s supporting through sponsorship.

“Events like these show you how the rugby league community can unite to raise money for a good cause.  Full credit must go to the Wren Brothers (Mark and Luke),” Kerrigan said.

“They started the concept and are determined to see it grow each year.”
