The Mackay Junior Rugby League is excited to announce that all Under 6 participants will play rugby league for free in 2017.

At the MJRFL Board meeting on August 8, the Board unanimously supported the motion moved by the treasurer Jan Dunn.

MJRFL chairman Barry Blanchfield welcomed the decision, saying: “This is a huge step forward for rugby league here in Mackay, now more than ever is the perfect time to participate in the greatest game of all. Mackay has been a fantastic nursery for some of our game's greatest players and this investment in our game can only be seen as a great thing for our game.”

Under 6 is the entry level age group for boys and girls starting out in rugby league and they play a modified game to ensure player safety is key.

“Under 6 footy is all about boys and girls learning the basics of the game and learning how to be part of a team environment. The aim of the game is fun and by playing with modified rules and a safe play code we see minimal injuries in our younger age groups," Blanchfield said.

Mackay Junior Rugby League is celebrating 50 years in 2016 and with this historic decision, junior league will continue to grow and prosper, cementing Mackay as rugby league heartland.
