Round 10 of the In Safe Hands Cup this weekend will be the last chance for players named in Poinsettias coach Craig Rogers final squad.
“The door is not closed on any player already named. I’ll be looking at players who can handle the two days” Rogers said.
The Poinsettias play on Saturday against SEQ on Saturday then back up on the Sunday against NQ.
The Ipswich Jets played two different halves of footy last week against Logan Brothers. They will need to convert that to the full 80 against a white hot Redcliffe unit. Though behind on the scoreboard last week at halftime, the Phins took the contest away from the Panthers with 24 unanswered second-half points.
Redcliffe are looking to stay at the top of the table before next weekend’s break. Curtis Johnston will be out to continue to collect ‘meat pies', scoring five in his past two outings. He will need his wheels against a Jets back three that get from 0 to 100 in no time. Both teams will run out a relatively unchanged side from last week.
Redcliffe’s co-competition leaders, Wynnum-Manly, will host the West Brisbane Panthers at Kitchener Park. The Seagulls will be fresh after the bye and looking to swoop on the wounded Big Cats. The Panthers have lost three on the trot, whilst Wynnum-Manly will be chasing four in a row, last losing to Redcliffe in round five. The Seagulls last encounter had them in an arm wrestle with Logan Brothers, grinding out a 20-14 win at Civic Park.
The Panthers will request that there is no halftime break this weekend, after leading going in to the sheds in their past two appearances. Wests will be looking to jump start their season. They have stalled with three straight losses and it will not be easy against a side that has seven Poinsettias squad members. Wayne Weekes' men have never been phased by the opposition, previously coming out on top in winning their first five of the In Safe Hands Cup.
On Sunday, Valleys will play host to the improving Logan Brothers. Coach Steve Bretherton’s boys have worked on their defence since the Tigers onslaught and have asked questions of Wynnum-Manly and the Jets in the past fortnight. Deleting momentary lapses of concentration from their game and putting a committed 80 minutes together are the solution to their quest for their second win of the season.
Valleys discipline and completion rates were a blight in the second half against the Easts Tigers Houdinis at home last week. Rowan Klien was outstanding in the Blue in White at five-eighth, earning him a late call-up to the Poinsettias. They will be bolstered with the return of the Big Man Troyden Watene and half Garry Riccardi.
