An extremely proud Queensland Under 18's coach, Josh Hannay, praised his charges efforts in the State of Origin curtain raiser on Wednesday night following their 35 to 28 loss to New South Wales.

"With five to go, we were attacking New South Wales line with a chance to maybe win it. So a really gutsy effort." said Hannay.

The former Origin centre and his support staff tried to instil that Queensland spirit and that 'never say die attitude' into the players over the six day camp leading into the match.

"While we didn't get the result, I thought they showed a lot of qualities that we're looking for from young Queensland players."
