The Sunshine Coast Falcons quickly found themselves back in the winner’s circle last night, defeating the Wynnum Manly Seagulls at BMD Kougari Oval one week removed from their first defeat in seven games.

In the crisp Bayside evening, the Falcons were in control for a large portion of the night, getting out to an early eight-point lead following a Joe Stimson try and Guy Hamilton penalty goal.

Hamilton’s boot would prove to be quite the lucrative weapon for the Falcons, with the halfback later slotting two more penalties in a seven-from-seven goal-kicking display, in addition to a pair of kick-based try assists.

Winger Alexander Copelin would be on the end of one of those assists, timing his leap perfectly to come down with a four-pointer to extend the lead to 14-0 after 23 minutes.

Falcons mistakes gave the Seagulls the platform to respond, to which they thought they had when Alex Barr got over before a double movement ruling.

The penalty proved to be a mere delay though, as two sets later, crowd favourite John Te Reo grounded a Jayden Berrell grubber right in front of the Chook Pen to get his team on the board after 29 minutes.

The Sunshine Coast wrestled momentum back into their favour before the half was over, with a Samuel Wright try and a second Hamilton penalty goal on halftime giving the Seagulls a lot to think about during the break.

A ‘re-addressing of attitude’ was the directive from Wynnum Manly coach Adam Brideson, who was disappointed to have started so slowly on a night of big occasion for one of the club’s most loyal contributors.

“Ultimately, they out enthused us,” Brideson said after the game. “To not start the game with so much to play for at home with Matty’s (Mathew Seamark) 200th game and to not come out with the intent that the club deserves was very disappointing.”

A reenergised Seagulls unit took the field in the second half however, and productive and repeat sets picked up as they looked to be the next to score.

They threatened to be so when half Aaron Booth sliced through the defence, eventuating in back-to-back penalties inside the 10, but zero points.

The Falcons in fact found themselves again on the board first when Matt Soper-Lawler picked up a scrappy pass before sending it out to Copelin who found Justin Olam back on the inside in the 64th minute.

Points did eventually return for the home side, with several incisive Daniel Ogden runs serving as the catalyst for an impressive Jack Goodsell try in the corner.

The subsequent conversion allowed Matthew Seamark the to cross the 1300-point mark as a consolation in his 200th Queensland / Intrust Cup game.

“It’s always good to be at home for milestones,” Seamark said of his achievement.

“I’m sure later on down the track it’ll mean quite a bit and whilst it’s certainly nice to be recognised for games that you’ve played, there’s plenty to focus on at the moment.”

The Falcons hope to start a new streak when they travel to Suzuki Stadium, Langland Park to take on the Easts Tigers next week, whilst Wynnum will play hosts to Souths Logan.
