The BMD Wynnum Manly Seagulls went down to the Souths Logan Magpies on Saturday night, the visitors coming away with 22–16 victory at BMD Kougari Oval.

It was a disrupted preparation for the Seagulls, who were forced to accommodate last-minute changes with several late-week injuries, but head coach Adam Brideson certainly didn’t attribute the loss to it.

“We had some blokes busted which certainly led to some holes, but there’s an expectation that when you pull a Wynnum jersey on that you get the job done” explained Brideson who, despite the loss, lauded his lads’ effort.

Spirit shows

“You never accept losing, but the character and spirit we showed against a very good football side is something I’m very proud of as a coach and as a club”.

Ball control seemed to be the deciding factor in both halves, with Souths taking care of the ball well in the first stanza en route to their first-half 12 points.

Joe Boyce crashed over from short range in the 13th minute and Herman Ese’ese, returning from the Broncos, set up Luke Archer for a try in the 19th minute after coming close to going over himself earlier.

Second half

The second half was an inspired one for the Gulls; the damage to their half depth furthered when Mitchell Moore succumbed to an injured pectoral by halftime, leaving the Wynnum faithful to rely on fresh faces to step up.

Paora Kemp was one of those to answer the call, scoring a double on debut in place of suspended fullback Daniel Ogden. This included an impressive 35m effort on the back of clinical set-up from interchange forwards Billy Solah and John Te Reo.

Centre Lenny Magey would later regain control for the Magpies, brushing past the defence for a try down the right edge to give his side another 12-point buffer after a successful Jamayne Isaako conversion.

Hopes alive

On the back of an improved completion rate, Wynnum kept hopes alive when Ngarima Pita got over for his first Intrust Super Cup try, but Souths Logan would defend out the remaining nine minutes to claim the two competition points.

“We turned over a bit of footy in the second half, only completing 9 out of our 15 sets,” Magpies coach Jon Buchanan said after his first match back at BMD Kougari Oval.

“But when the game was really in the balance, I thought we showed plenty of good defensive qualities to win the footy game.”

Up next

Wynnum Manly travel north the Rockhampton next week for a clash with the Central Queensland Capras whilst Souths Logan host the Ipswich Jets at Davies Park.
