The 2017 Brisbane Rugby League competition (sponsored by In Safe Hands Educators in Child Safety) played out its second-last round of fixtures with two things certain; Redcliffe are the minor premiers and Logan Brothers will finish the season in last place this year.

Redcliffe are the defending premiers and have now claimed the 2017 minor premiership so are white hot favourites to go back-to-back this season after a clinical display to overpower second-placed West Brisbane Panthers.

Redcliffe shot out to a 12-0 lead early in the first half in their clash, with prop Taylor Brown crashing over from a flat pass five metres out from hooker Hugh Pratt. A cross-field kick into the in-goal then had centre Josh Rudolph fly high to touch down.

Panthers hit back when Paul Ulberg was over in the left corner. This was followed by Kennedy Pettybourne regathering a cross-field kick that was allowed to bounce, and he then offloaded to inside support Shaun Tupou who crossed in the right corner. Jamie Olds converted both tries and it was all locked up 12-12.

With three minutes remaining until halftime, a dummy half hit-and-spin on the Panthers try line by Pratt saw Redcliffe take an 18-12 lead.

In the sixth minute after the resumption, Wests kept the ball moving from left to right and Olds dove over in the right corner.

These would be the last points scored by the visitors as Redcliffe’s Rudolph and Pratt added to their first half tally, crossing to give the Dolphins a win.

The Panthers take on Valleys at Kev McKell Oval on Saturday afternoon while Redcliffe have a bye.

Valleys played their last home game of the regular season against the Tigers and it only took two minutes for them to score as Rowan Klein threw a dummy and crashed into the right hand upright.

Eighteen minutes later, Tigers left winger David McKenna put a grubber through to regather and put the visitors on the scoreboard.

Valleys were in again when playmaker Troyden Watene turned the ball back inside to fullback Joe Bond to cross and take the halftime score to 12-6.

Valleys crossed again early in the second half after an offload from Paul Ivan sent Ryley Kajewski on his way. The Diehards followed that up 10 minutes later after scoring from a scrum feed win when left wing Tom Collins went over to lead 24-6.

The Tigers looked gone until the skills of prop John Puna went on display as he soared high above the pack to snatch the Steeden and place under the uprights in a magnificent display.

Down 24-12, Easts fought their way in again after the brilliance of fullback Brandon Downey came to Emerson Park. After a shocker of a pass that had him turn to regather on his own 40m line, he then waltzed his way through the Diehards defence to take the score to 24-18.

With six minutes remaining in the contest, Valleys hooker Chris Aiton darted from dummy half to go over to give Valleys a 30-18 victory.

This weekend, Valleys host arch rivals West Brisbane while Easts face Logan Brothers.

Ipswich kept their finals hopes alive after putting on a performance that all in the competition knew the Jets were capable of.

It was all the backs for Ipswich with Ono So’Oialo, Bernard Mosby and Ray Baira scoring doubles for a 10-try to-three victory which featured some outrageous tries scored from within their own half.

Grand finalists last year, Ipswich must defeat Wynnum Manly at home this week and have Logan Brothers defeat Easts to advance to the finals.
