The Roma and District grand finals were played last Sunday at Bassett Park with great footy played in all games and featuring some real country-style support.

Supporters packed the grandstands and bar; while vehicles parked around the field to catch a glimpse of the action.

Some people watched the games in real comfort with recliner armchairs in the back of utes whilst the Cities supporters had a semi-trailer parked at one end to jump on in support of their three teams involved.

At the other end of the field, the Surat Red Bulls had their tents and own PA system operating for the day.

Chinchilla, St George and Miles supporters were also there in numbers cheering on their teams in the curtain-raisers.

It was a great turn-out and showed that rugby league is very much alive in the bush.

The day started out with the Under 16 final between Surat and St George with the Red Bulls raging favourites for this game.

St George certainly made them work for it until the Bulls ran away with the game in the second half, winning 46-4.

The Under 18 final was an even game after minor premiers Mitchell were knocked during the semis.

In a game that could have gone either way, Chinchilla eventually ran out winners, defeating Surat 26-16.

The Reserve Grade grand final was an outstanding game of footy with big hits being exchanged by both teams and good tries scored throughout the game.

This was for the entire game and looked like it could go into extra-time, but Cities scored a try near the bell to run out winners over the Red Bulls 30-24.  Neither team deserved to lose this one.

Cities were always expected to win the A Grade as they had gone through the season undefeated, but someone forgot to tell Miles.

The first half was some of the best footy you would like to watch with Miles ahead by two points at the break.

Halftime was not kind to Miles as Cities came out of the sheds and scored soon after the break, giving the defending premiers momentum to score further points and wrap up this year’s premiership.

One of the many talking points after the game was the respect all teams had for the day with special mention to the losing captains in each game, who despite their disappointment, delivered speeches that Cameron Smith would have been proud of.

It was also a successful day for the Roma and District Referees who applied themselves with professionalism - which was recognised by the supporters of all teams.

Congratulations to Boomer Kennedy who has been refereeing in the area for 31 years and officiated his 28th RDRL grand final on Sunday – what an achievement.

Overall, this year’s grand final was a day the Roma and District Rugby League can be extremely proud of.
