Oscar Pannifex made a stunning debut as a winger as the University of Queensland Hounds shocked the QUT Trouts 42-10 to book a grand final spot last night.

The Hounds will face the Griffith Logan Redbacks in the Universities Rugby League Queensland decider at Davies Park next Wednesday, September 13.

The Redbacks accounted for the Griffith Dragons 38-16 at home last night, but it was at Bishop Park where the upset happened.

Normally a half, Pannifex scored an amazing five tries in his first game on the wing after he had borrowed a pair of boots.

At training during the week, Pannifex wasn’t happy with his old boots, so team-mate Teddy Ah Ben gave him a new set.

They worked a treat as Pannifex set a URLQ finals record with five four-pointers in the win by coach Scott Barker’s team.

Hounds’ fullback Chris Hansen was in rare touch as the Hounds took the match away from the minor premiers by leading 24-0 at halftime.

Pannifex then scored four tries in a 16-minute period of the second half to complete a huge upset and book a spot in the grand final.

Down at Logan, the Redbacks showed they were keen to get back to premiership glory with a strong 22-point victory.

The Redbacks won three straight URLQ grand finals between 2013-15, and now have the chance to add another one under coach Nathan Osborne.

The Redbacks led 18-12 at halftime, but try-scoring doubles to speedy hooker Sam Vaughey and forward Justin Fiso finished off the Dragons.

Matt Butler scored two tries for the Dragons, who missed the chance to avenge their tight 2016 grand final loss to QUT.
