The University of Queensland Hounds capped a stunning finals campaign by claiming the Universities Rugby League Queensland grand final on Wednesday night.

The Hounds were in control of the entire match at Davies Park, turning a 12-4 halftime lead into a 24-4 victory over the Griffith Logan Redbacks.

It was a super effort after coming from fourth-place on the ladder under new coach Scott Barker.

In doing so, the Hounds backed up their stunning 42-10 semi-final win over minor premiers the QUT Trouts to take their first decider in several years.

The Redbacks went into the match with confidence after finishing second on the ladder and doing away with the Griffith Dragons the previous week.

The match started evenly, with both sides blowing chances with dropped ball.

But the superior combinations of the Hounds proved telling as they skipped out to a 6-0 lead through big prop Dominic Heidke in the 19th minute.

Just four minutes later, Aaron Werth got the first of his two tries, with his halves partner Peter Bonniface kicking the Hounds ahead 12-0.

But Redback Albert Robertson kept his side in the match when he scored eight minutes before halftime to bring it back to 12-4.

However, Werth went over again just after the break and the Hounds were just 30 minutes away from victory.

A 90m opportunist’s try to fullback Chris Hansen with 17 minutes left to play proved a telling blow.

After the match, Hansen was named man of the match as he and his team-mates accepted their winner’s medals.
