The 2017 Cowboys Schoolgirls Challenge was staged at Townville’s Centrals Tigers ASA Junior Rugby last month, with a great display of rugby league put on by the young players.

Held on Friday, October 20; the annual carnival saw 20 teams take part in the Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16 age groups.

Bowen SHS / Proserpine SHS / Northern Beaches SHS

Overall, 250 schoolgirls from all across North Queensland – including Tagai Island State College, Mt Isa’s Good Shepherd Catholic College and Bowen SHS – competed at the newly renovated fields.

The respective winners of the day were:

Under 16: Kirwan State High School
Under 14: Kirwan State High School
Under 12: Atherton SS (Tablelands Combined)

This carnival has encouraged Townsville and District Junior Rugby League to form a girls sub-committee leading into the 2018 season where they anticipate to see a regular season up and running in the Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17 age divisions.

This year’s Cowboys Schoolgirls Challenge day was a fantastic group effort from the North Queensland NRL Development Team combined with Keeown Rawnsley (Female Participation Coordinator, Queensland) and Jenni-Sue Hoepper (QRL Women’s Representative player and NRL Ambassador).
