Newest SEQW clubs face off

The SEQW Division 1 competition continues into its second week with three evenly matched contests set for Round 2.

The two newest additions to the competition, Tweed Heads and Toowoomba, go head-to-head at Piggabeen on Saturday with both clubs searching for their first win.

Toowoomba joined the competition last season, while the Seagulls made their debut last weekend against the Easts Tigers.

Both teams suffered defeat in Round 1, but one of them will walk away from Saturday’s clash with their first win of the season, a shot of confidence and some momentum to carry into the early portion of the season.

Elsewhere in Round 2, Brothers Ipswich will make their first appearance of the year after sitting out Round 1 with the bye.

Brothers Ipswich have been one of the competition’s powerhouse teams in recent years and will be keen to make a strong impression in their clash with Souths Logan Magpies on Sunday.

The Magpies went down narrowly in the opening round against the Burleigh Bears, falling four points short of claiming a massive scalp.

As for Burleigh, the four-time defending premiers fielded a new-look team in Round 1, with eight of their 17 running out in a Bears jersey for the first time.

Some of Burleigh’s key contributors from recent years have moved on to help grow the women’s game at other clubs in the South East region, but the Bears are still a proud group who will be very difficult to beat this season.

They’ll face a stiff test on Sunday when they host the Easts Tigers, who didn’t concede a point in an impressive first round victory over Tweed Heads.
