Queensland Origin legend Matt Bowen and former Cowboys player Ray Thompson will visit Richmond next month to help raise cheer in the community.
Earlier in 2019, the Flinders Highway and the communities of the Flinders Highway were devastated by a severe weather event.
The Queensland Rugby League was a successful recipient in round one of the Year of Outback Tourism Events Program during the Year of Outback Tourism 2019 and this funding will be used to help take Bowen and Thompson west on September 6-7.
Thompson played 111 games for the Cowboys, four Internationals for Papua New Guinea and in 2015 played for the Indigenous All Stars.
Bowen played 270 games for the Cowboys in the NRL and 45 for the Wigan Warriors in the English Super League.
Bowen also played 10 games for Queensland, a match for Australia, two games for the Indigenous All Stars and twice for the Prime Minister’s 13.
Both are legends in the north and are excited to be able to travel to the communities of the Flinders Highway to share their knowledge and experiences in the game and to have some fun with the people in the communities.
Planning is still under way for the trip, but it is anticipated that the players will visit the community of Hughenden and Hughenden State School on the way out and then participate in some activities in Richmond on Friday, September 6.
There will be a rugby league clinic on the Friday afternoon in Richmond and a community event and then on Saturday, the players will attend a full day of rugby league at Charlie Wehlow Oval where juniors from Hughenden, Richmond, Julia Creek and Normanton / Karumba will play along with a senior women’s and men’s game.
It should be a great two days and rugby league fans are encouraged to pop these dates into their calendars, so they don’t forget to be at Richmond on September 6-7.
QRL Northern Education and Wellbeing Manager Rob Hall will accompany Bowen and Thompson on the trip and will co-ordinate all the activities for the two days.
