Queensland Pacific Island Cultural Carnival focused on 2021 return

The annual Queensland Pacific Island Cultural Carnival has grown to be one of the southeast region’s most popular events and while this year, organisers have had to call off the tournament, plans are in being made for it to return in 2021.

Usually held in late October each year, the carnival strives to connect Queensland Pasifika communities and has become an integral event that helps celebrate the various cultures and identities.

However, given the ongoing concerns around COVID-19, the decision has been made by the participating QPICC nations to cancel the event this year and focus as a community on ensuring the health and safety of all Pasifika families, participants and supporters.

The Queensland Rugby League recently launched a Diversity and Inclusion Framework which will continue to see events such as the QPICC tournament play a vital role in ensuring rugby league remains a game that is accessible and welcoming to people of all cultures and backgrounds.

QRL South East Queensland region chair Brad Tallon said he looked forward to seeing the carnival return in 2021.

“The Queensland Pacific Island Cultural Carnival has been a great opportunity to assist the various communities maintain their cultural heritage whilst playing the game we all love,” Tallon said.

“Community leaders have been able to use the time preparing for the carnival to not only prepare the players for the game, but educate them on the language, cooking, dancing and other cultural elements of the various countries that take part.

“From humble beginnings eight years ago, the carnival has grown into one of the best events in the QRL SEQ calendar.

“Although it is disappointing that it is unable to be held this year, we look forward to its return in 2021.”
