Statewide score wrap: Dolphins travel along swimmingly

Kawana Dolphins have dived head-first into the new season and are the undefeated leaders of the Maudsley Excavations Cup after 10 rounds of play.

The only blemish to their perfect start has been a draw in Round 5 to the second-placed Beerwah; otherwise, it has been smooth sailing for the Sunshine Coast-based club.

After toppling Gympie at the weekend, they are set to be challenged by the third-placed Noosa Pirates this coming Saturday and are hoping to continue their strong form in the backend of the season.

Normanby Hounds are the only undefeated side in the Brisbane Premier A Grade competition after mauling the Seagulls at Bert St Clair Oval last Saturday 52-12.

Right winger Jack Smith again posted three tries in the one game, taking his season tally to 11 thus far.

For the first and last five minutes, the previously undefeated Wynnum Manly Seagulls showed signs of their desire to share top spot, but in the remaining 70 minutes, it was all the Hounds at their best - led by Lachlan Cooper.

After completing at over 80 per cent for the game, Normanby coach Wayne Barnett said it was a result of hard work.

“We work hard weekly to get our completion rates up for each week," Barnett said.

“Wynnum are a good side, they are definitely a threat and we will be looking out for them next round.

"I ask our forwards to do a job up the middle every week. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t; but today, our forwards were really good."

Pine Rivers continued on their winning way with a comfortable 38-16 win over Valleys. The Bears have now won three in a row, with their last defeat being only by two points against the Seagulls.

They have put 118 points on the board with those three wins.

With this recent defeat, Valleys have lost four on the trot and will reset with a bye this weekend.

West Brisbane added to Carina’s woes after easily accounting for the Tigers 44-12.

Panthers' Liam Horne and Calum Gahan crossed twice each for the mud and bloods to go back-to-back.

Carina now join Valleys, Brighton and Beenleigh outside of the top five on 11 points.

Bulimba survived what would have been a brutal week of defensive training after a massive loss to the Panthers the previous week, returning to the winner's circle by getting over Beenleigh 34-16 at Balmoral Sports Reserve.

The Pride once again turned up in the second half as they did against the Bears the previous week, but the damage had been done.

Wattles Warriors scored an excellent win 25-12 over Valleys Roosters on
Saturday night at Herb Steinohrt Oval. Wattles outplayed Roosters in all
aspects of the game, leading 12-0 at half-time before going on with it in the second 40.

Brothers won their third game in a row, proving too good for Gatton Hawks on Saturday night at Glenholme Park.

In front of a good home crowd, Brothers co-captain Sam Betros led his team to a 22-10 lead at half-time and put the Hawks away in the second half, running out winners 48-18.

The Hawks did get within 10 points early in the second half with the scoreboard at 28-18, but that was as close as Gatton got.

Warwick fought off a determined Dalby to win a tight contest on Sunday afternoon.

After the Cowboys led 18-4 midway through the first half, the Diehards hit back and veterans Steve Franciscus and Corey Blades combined to score with five minutes remaining to get within two points and have a shake at snatching the win.

But the Cowboys hung on for a very important win which sees them in equal second position on the TRL ladder.

On top of the ladder, the undefeated Goondiwindi Boars had a tough tussle on their hands when they escaped with a win against a determined Souths Tigers outfit.

Leading try-scorer David Armstrong proved the difference by scoring three four-pointers for the Boars - his speed again a factor and was supported by coach Travis Waddell.

At Highfields, the Newtown Lions got within two points of the Eagles until the floodgates opened - the home side going on to post a 58-26 win and leap to equal-second in the TRL premiership.

And in the final match of the weekend, Pittsworth bounced back to the winner’s circle with a good win over Oakey 48-28 on Sunday afternoon.

Danes fullback Chris Woodbridge scored four unanswered first half tries to set up the victory; but despite the loss, Oakey showed they can compete and did trouble the Danes once they had possession.

Bundaberg Broadcasters Premiership

Brothers Sam and Chris Robinson featured prominently in the scoring as Wests Panthers bounced back from their big loss to Wallaroos eight days earlier and shored up top place on the Bundaberg Broadcasters A Grade Premiership table with a 40-22 victory over Waves Tigers at Salter Oval on Sunday.

As the competition reached the half-way point of the season, centre Sam bagged a double, while little brother Chris - backing up from a 54-4 romp against an under-manned Past Brothers in under 18 - racked up 16 points at fullback with one try and six conversions.

Easts Magpies moved past Wests on the ladder in sentencing hosts Hervey Bay Seagulls to their fourth straight defeat on Saturday 36-18, but the Panthers - who paid the price for missing Chris Robinson, and powerhouse forwards Josh Tanner, Lachlan Patterson and Jared Johnson against Wallaroos last week - reclaimed top spot, returning to their best against a brave but outclassed Tigers.

However, after being outright leaders a month ago, the Seagulls dropped down one more position to fourth, overtaken by Brothers, who outgunned Wallaroos 42-22 in the early match on Sunday’s program.

Young 18-year-old Panthers winger Isaiah Bullard, who started the season in Reserve Grade, also grabbed two tries to continue his good form.

But while Wests have set the standard all season, apart from a fighting loss to the Seagulls at home in Round 4 and being unable to overcome the absence of a quartet of stars against Wallaroos, it was again evident against the Seagulls that Magpies coach Brent Kuskey’s playing comeback in Round 7 has also transformed them into serious contenders.

Brothers, who made an underwhelming start to their title defence by winning just two of their first six matches, also looked good against Roos with by far their best performance of the season. If they can maintain the same form and intensity, they too could challenge for the premiership.

For Easts though, after breaking the scoring shackles with a hat-trick against the Tigers a week earlier, multiple BRL leading try-scoring centre Trent Seeds again wreaked havoc against the Bay, including notching a double, along with high-class halfback Andreas Nona and captain, mercurial five-eighth, and reigning BRL player of the year Matthew Craven.

For Brothers, barnstorming five-eighth Zak Bainbridge also had a whale of a game, including amassing 18 points from two tries and five goals in a similar robust team performance, but they built their win on a dominant display by their pack in which second rower Royce Blair and club stalwart front rower Aaron Hall, in his fourth game since coming out of retirement, were absolutely outstanding.
