Round 2 preview: Seagulls look to continue winning ways

The first wave of players filtering back into this year’s BMD Premiership competition will be on show this weekend, with North Queensland Gold Stars in particular seeing a influx of fresh faces.

Newcastle Knights quartet Romy Teitzel (fullback), Emma Manzelmann (hooker), Katie Green and Lauren Moss (on the wing) have all been named for the Gold Stars for this Saturday’s match against Souths Logan Magpies, which will be played in the lead up to the North Queensland Cowboys versus Sydney Roosters match.

The Magpies are a young and more inexperienced side, but have Under 19 representative player Tyesha Mikaio named to play, while coach Maia Tua-Davidson has been named in the reserves.

However, such is the growing depth in the game in Queensland, Round 1 last weekend still produced four good games, with plenty of skills on show.

At Piggabeen, Tweed Seagulls were too strong for the Gold Stars, but it was telling they had the experience of Harvey Norman Queensland Maroons representative Rona Peters, who also captained the side, leading the way.

Speaking before the match, coach Spencer Taplin said Peters was helping bring the next wave of talent through the club.

“She’s been around the track long enough to know what she’s doing out there," Taplin said.

“I have the utmost confidence in her. She’s been doing a great job mentoring the younger girls.”

This weekend, the Seagulls will play their game against Brisbane Tigers at BMD Kougari Oval, after the wet weather forced a change in venue.

In a double header for the BMD Premiership, (interrupted by the postponed Round 1 Cyril Connell Challenge game between Norths Devils and Wynnum Manly Seagulls), the Wynnum Manly versus Central Queensland Capras match will be played at 3pm and is set to be a cracker.

Both teams were Round 1 winners in what could be considered upset results, with the Seagulls defeating reigning premiers, Burleigh Bears, in their Round 1 debut in the competition.

The Capras stole a late win in spectacular fashion, with centre Emma Paki plucking the ball from the air just outside the line before planting the ball down for the match-winner.

Saturday’s other game will see rivals West Brisbane Panthers travel to Pizzey Park to take on the Bears.

Both sides will be keen to get their first win on the board in the 2022 season after suffering close losses last weekend.
