Statewide score wrap: Eagles fly high in first start

An emotion-charged occasion more than a decade in the making brought the best out of Currumbin Eagles for a debut Holcim Cup win on Saturday.
The Eagles beat fellow A grade newcomers Beenleigh Pride 24-12 in their opening match at Ormeau.
Currumbin spent much of the opening stanza camped in their opponents' half, and it was Kiwi Ferns international Crystal Tamarua leading the way up the middle.
The experienced star crashed over for two tries along with her efforts guiding the team into strong attacking positions, along with their NRLW experienced captain Teaghan Hartigan.
The match would particularly poignant for Hartigan, Marlie Phillips and her Eagles assistant coach, Harvey Norman Queensland Maroons star Tazmin Gray.
The trio played for Currumbin's under 18 girls team a decade ago, but the club was unable to go on with a senior team.
Eagles junior Gray was watching on from the sideline, water at the ready, so proud at seeing the red jerseys in action again and getting a bit of itchy feet herself.
"It was just like a dream come true for me to be able to watch a group of girls that were really keen. For some of them it was their first game and some have played international footy and NRLW, so to watch all that unfold and then just watch that on Saturday was really exciting to me," she said.
"I think everyone surprised me in the sense that some of those girls haven't even played rugby league ever. So it was definitely a team effort.
"Everyone had a crack and put their best foot forward and no one shied away and that's what we've seen at training, which is why it was so exciting to see that out on the field.
"Our experienced players obviously led from the front and those girls did a job but everyone collectively put their hand up on the weekend and did the club proud."
Gray said having the likes of Tamarua and Hartigan on the field was so valuable for those new to the game.
"It's always good to have an international rugby league player play in a game like that and I think it speaks volumes to the person she is. She really just wanted to get back into footy and enjoy her footy and I think this is a pathway we can create for young girls to aspire to be much like her and shoot for the stars," she said.
"It humbles the team to see a player of her calibre play alongside them."
It has humbled Gray too, learning how to best communicate with less experienced players so she can develop more skills for high level opportunities down the track.
And sometime in the next few years she's determined to pull on that Currumbin jersey at least once.
While the Eagles got the two points in their first start, Beenleigh had some highlights during the match, including a long range effort from fullback Tori Groves-Little to score the team's first ever try late in the first half, to the hollers of the bench and solid contingent of fans.
The former Gold Coast Suns AFLW player had some dynamic touches from fullback and was adept with long kicks to space to help turn the Eagles around.
Fellow first-time Holcim Cup starters Nerang Roosters held their own stepping up to the top grade, narrowly falling short of Wynnum Manly, while reigning premiers Goodna reinforced their status with a 40-4 win.
