Biography

Named lock in the Queensland Team of the Century in 2008, Bob Lindner’s illustrious Origin career started in 1984, when he was selected on the bench with another rookie, Brett French.

It wasn’t long before 'Bustling Bob' became a key member of the Maroons' pack, starting in 16 of the next 18 games, in a career which featured 25 Origin appearances, including two man of the match performances.

The Cannon Hill Stars' junior also played 24 Tests for Australia; touring Britain and France in 1986 and 1990, as well as making several trips to Papua New Guinea, and a tour of New Zealand, in 1993.

He also was a member of Australia's World Cup winning sides – at Eden Park, Auckland in 1988 (v New Zealand) and London's Wembley Stadium in 1992 (v Great Britain).

Lindner began his Brisbane Rugby League journey with Souths Magpies in 1983, and played in their 42-8 loss to Wynnum Manly in the 1984 grand final. He switched to Wynnum Manly the following year, only to be on the losing side in the grand final against Souths. But he got his hands on the Brisbane Rugby League premiership trophy in 1986, when Wynnum Manly defeated Brothers in the grand final.

My last Origin game (in 1993), I scored a try, and it's something I'll never forget.

The following year, then then 24-year-old year-old optometrist signed with Parramatta, where he played two seasons, before linking with Gold Coast Seagulls at Tweed Heads.

After just one season at Seagulls, he returned to Sydney, and played the next three years with Wests Magpies, before finishing his Australian club career with Illawarra in 1993, when he was named Dally M Second Rower of the Year.

Having already played two off-seasons with Castleford in England in the 1980s, Lindner headed to the UK once more, where, as captain-coach, he guided Oldham back to the top division.

He returned to Australia, initially to play with South Queensland Crushers, before accepting the job as head coach at the fledgling club, a position he held for two years.

After his time at the Crushers, Lindner continued on his coaching journey with Brisbane Brothers, and then Ipswich Brothers.

Later, he maintained his association with the game as a member of the NRL Judiciary.
