Wynnum Manly and Bears ready for grand final clash

By Rebecca Singh

The Wynnum Manly Seagulls are the only team to defeat the Burleigh Bears this season, and they will be desperate to do it again when the two sides meet in the FOGs Colts Challenge decider on Intrust Super Cup grand final day.

The Bears were undefeated throughout the regular season (with only the Norths Devils able to take a point away from them with a Round 15 draw). However, their only loss came a fortnight ago, with the Seagulls pinching a tight 28-26 victory in the qualifying final.

Wynnum coach Leon Cherry said his side were ready to face a fired-up Bears outfit and were prepared to get into a grind to see out the match.

“They are a really good team and they aren’t your typical under 20s side,” Cherry said.

“They are a fair side and we will have to be better across the park.

“Grand finals are built on completions, sustaining pressure, defence and getting the little things right.”

After securing the win over the Norths Devils in last weekend’s preliminary final, Bears coach Darryl Fisher said he was pleased with his side’s effort in getting into the grand final.

The Bears ran out to an imposing 30-0 halftime lead before the Devils fought back to eventually go down 36-24.

“It was great getting out to an early lead, but it was pretty nerve-racking in the second half,” Fisher said.

“We handled the momentum shifts in the second half.

“It was pretty tough as the Devils were pretty unstoppable, but we handled it well and got the win in then end.

“We still have areas in our defence which we will have to improve for this weekend.

“We will have to focus on momentum shifts, just being patient and manage as best we can.”
