The In Safe Hands Cup BRL A Grade returns for Round 11 after a break for the QRL A Grade State Carnival, held at Owen Park, Southport last weekend.
Congratulations to the players from the BRL competition who were selected in the Queensland Rangers side to take on the NSWRL Ron Massey Cup squad. They will square off at Pizzey Park Burleigh on June 25 as a curtain raiser to the Intrust Super Cup.
Round 11 opens with West Brisbane returning to North Ipswich Reserve. The last time the Panthers were at the Jets home ground, the Ipswich side progressed to the grand final after a thrilling win two and a half minutes from fulltime.
That was last year. Panthers coach Wayne Weekes and his side have had the week off to reflect on their string of losses, and have to go back to Round 5 for their last win over Logan Brothers at Davies Park.
Since the loss of half Ollie Olds, the Panthers have used several halves combinations. Once again this week it will be a new pairing with Shaun Tupou teaming up with former Redcliffe half Luke Strasser.
The Jets have a similar side that defeated the premiers Redcliffe in a close encounter two weeks ago and starting to gain momentum.
The break would not have suited coach Mark Bishop as he finally had his troops firing since his ‘motivational’ halftime speech when playing the Brethren in Round 9.
This game shapes as another beauty with some super serious talent out wide in both line ups.
Standing alone at the top of the ladder, the Wynnum Manly Seagulls will look to extend their run of four wins, while the Diehards will be out to stay in touch with the Top 5. In fact, with a win (and if other results go their way), Don Gailer’s men could find themselves in equal third, such is the closeness of this competition.
Poinsettias Haydan Lipp, Rowan Klein, Chris Aiton and Troyden Watene and company will come up against a Seagulls side at BMD Kougari Oval that has players coming back to the BRL from the Intrust Super Cup side and Mitchell Buckett, John Te Reo and Brendon Gibb will be out to recapture their positions.
The last time these sides met in Round 2, the Seagulls came away with the two points, 24-12 at Emerson Park.
Sunday’s clash between the Redcliffe Dolphins and Easts Tigers at Dolphin Oval has all the ingredients for an outstanding encounter.
Both camps have mixed thoughts on the bye last weekend. The Tigers have been piling the points on and would have preferred to keep their good forming rolling along. Redcliffe were cruelled by injury in their loss to the Jets two weeks ago and will better for the break.
The Tigers have “Mister Four Points” out wide in Brandon Downey, with his partner in crime the elusive Maeli Seve by his side. However, the battle has to be won up front first.
That won’t be easy, with Redcliffe rolling out a large and mobile pack. Nathan Watts, Nick Ritter and Jaz Nahu-Main were outstanding for the Poinsettias last week, and coach Daniel Green will be looking for that form to take on the Tigers.
