Biography

There’s only one “Alfie” Langer – the courageous halfback the epitome of playing above one’s size.

Despite only being 165cm tall, the wiry halfback dominated rugby league for 16 years, in a legendary career.

Alfie Langer - Little legend

Langer’s vision, deft passing and kicking games, combined with a willingness to back himself, created havoc for countless opponents.

Langer burst onto the scene from the Ipswich Norths club, playing for the Jets in the State League in 1985, and earning Origin selection from Ipswich in the club's second full season in the Brisbane Premiership.

A man of the match award in the third and deciding Origin match in 1987 was a taste of things to come.

The tough playmaker would win an amazing 34 caps for his beloved Queensland and provide some of Origin's most memorable moments.

15 - Alfie answers Origin SOS

Whether slotting match-winning field goals; captaining the Maroons or making his incredible Game III comeback in 2001 - from English club, Warrington - the cheeky half could seemingly do it all.

A Sports Australia Hall of Famer, plus three-time Dally M Halfback of the Year, the multiple-premiership winning Brisbane Broncos half remains one of Queensland’s favourite sons.

He won the Clive Churchill Medal as player of the match in the Brisbane's maiden grand final win in 1992, and captained the club for eight years.

He was the Broncos Player of the Year five times, and scored 100 tries for the club, as well as kicking eight goals and five field goals.

Langer won the Rothmans Gold Medal in 1992, and the major Dally M Award in 1996.

He had made his Test debut against Papua New Guinea at Eric Weissel Oval, Wagga in 1988 and later that year was man of the match in Australia's 25-12 win over New Zealand in the World Cup final at a packed Eden Park in Auckland.

You could always rely on Alfie to win you a game.

Brad Thorn FOG #94

He played a total of 24 Tests, touring Britain and France in 1990 and 1994, and touring New Zealand in 1993. He also played one Super League Test against New Zealand in 1997.

Since his retirement as a player, following a farewell season at the Broncos in 2002, he has remained linked to the game through involvements with the Origin staff, and also as a skills' coach; trainer and corporate ambassador for the Broncos.

He comes from a family rich in rugby league tradition, with his father, Harry having played for Ipswich Railways, while brothers, Cliff, Kevin and Neville all played first grade football, with Kevin, a former Australian under 18 representative, winning 'The Courier-Mail' Best and Fairest Award from Brisbane Wests, in 1985.

Rita Langer, the boys' mum, has been a stalwart of the Ipswich Norths' club.

'Alfie' has been honoured with a statue in the northern forecourt of Suncorp Stadium.
