Biography

Paul 'Genghis' Khan was a favourite with Queensland Origin legend, Arthur Beetson, because of his ball playing skills.

Khan played in four grand finals in an illustrious 16-year senior career. In Brisbane, he played in Easts 18-10 loss to Valleys in 1971, and then got his revenge against Valleys in the decider the following year.

He had a stint with Norths in Brisbane in 1974, before signing with Cronulla on the recommendation of Norths' former British Test half, Tommy Bishop.

Like Des Morris, Paul Khan was unlucky not to play for Australia.

Khan played in the famous drawn grand final against Manly in 1978, and then backed up for the mid-week replay, which Manly won 16-0. In 1983, he played in Redcliffe's 14-8 loss to his old club, Easts in the Brisbane grand final.

Khan made his Origin debut from Cronulla in 1981, and then played all three Origin matches in 1982, from Brisbane, where he had returned to the Easts Tigers, helping them to the inaugural state league title.

The following year, he switched to Redcliffe, and toured England at the end of the season with the Queensland side. Khan had won a new legion of fans in England in the mid-1970s, during a stint with the Castleford club.

While at Cronulla, he helped the Sharks to their first piece of silverware, a win over Combined Brisbane in the 1979 Amco Cup Final.

"It's good to win a grand final, but I'm still a Brisbane bloke," he told Wally Lewis afterwards.

Khan, who represented New South Wales from Cronulla in 1978, also created unique league trivia, in becoming the first Shark to don the Maroon in Origin – paving the way for the likes of Mat Rogers, Paul Green and Valentine Holmes.

He retired at the end of the 1984 season and coached Redcliffe under 18s.
