A HERCULEAN effort in defence has seen the Wynnum Manly Seagulls hold out the Souths Logan Magpies to post a 30-12 win at Davies Park yesterday afternoon.

They were battered and bruised in the process with a number of players forced to leave the field early due to injury.

The visiting Seagulls team were in amongst the points early with firstly Matt Grieve and then Jason Moon scoring within the first 10 minutes of the match to take a 10-0 lead.

However, in a half where tries were scored at regular intervals, the Magpies responded via halfback Rhys Jacks to narrow the margin.

Returning to his side following Wednesday nights interstate Residents match Wynnum five-eighth Jacob Fauid ran in under the posts after his side had outwitted the Magpies defence with some quick passing and offloads.

With the Souths Logan defenders again falling off the pace; the Seagulls were in again, with Moon picking up his double after going over in the left-hand corner of the field.

Trailing 22-6 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the half, the home side pushed hard and were rewarded with a try to second rower Chris Faust after he put in a good chase following a kick ahead.

The Magpies then had the chance to add to their points tally and applied heavy pressure to the Wynnum line as the minutes ticked away in the half.

However, the Seagulls strong defence in that period didn't allow them to capitalise on their many chances before the halftime break in what proved to be the difference in the end.

While points seemed to come easy in the first half; there was only one try scored in the second, with Wynnum fullback Jeriah Goodrich having that honour.

Souths had their chances to level in the second half and engaged in a long period of attack, but as it was in the first half, Wynnum's defence was up to the task.

The only other points came via a penalty kick from Kurt French after Souths forward Mat Pitman was put on report.

Next weekend, Wynnum will host Tweed Heads in the Channel 9 TV game, while Souths will travel to Dolphin Oval to take on Redcliffe.
