The Nambour Crushers have staked their claim as genuine contenders in the Caloundra RSL A-grade cup, recording a dominant 40-6 win over the Noosa Pirates at Crusher Park, Nambour.

Despite going to an early lead, the Pirates were never in the hunt with the Crushers displaying rock-solid defence and some brilliance in attack to score 40 unanswered points.

Crushers winger Kenny Knight bagged a hat-trick of tries but was outshone by hulking prop, Rob Cordwell, who scored two tries and was explosive in both defence and attack.

Captain-coach James Boyce was extremely pleased with his team’s effort, especially that of Cordwell.

“Rob is a great player,” Boyce said of his prop.

“He did have a great game and I think his best (form) is still in front of him.”

Despite a convincing win, the Crushers equalled the Pirates in handling errors and Boyce isn’t letting the team get too far ahead of themselves as they face the defending premiers Kawana this weekend.

“I was happy with how the team played…but there are patches of the game that let us down,” he said.

“We can’t afford to switch off against Kawana next week.

“I think we can still improve on our overall game… that includes defence and attack.”

In other results last weekend, both Maroochydore-Coolum and Kawana continued their unbeaten runs with the Swans beating the Caloundra Sharks 30-20 and the Dolphins thumping the Bribie Island Warrigals 80-6.

Kawana’s Jordan Meads scored a whopping 40 points in their match, including five tries and 10 goals.

Caboolture defeated Gympie 38-16 with Dylan Hawea picking up a hat-trick of tries.

This Saturday sees Nambour taking on Kawana at Crusher Park and Gympie versus Bribie Island.

Sunday will see Caboolture taking on Maroochydore-Coolum at Caboolture and Noosa versus Caloundra at Noosa.
