QUEENSLAND Origin legend Arthur Beetson’s contribution to the game will be honoured once again, with his number 11 jersey to be retired for Game I of this year’s series.

The decision to retire the inaugural Maroons captain’s jersey for the 100th State of Origin match was made as an acknowledgement of the immense role Beetson played in establishing Origin as one of sport’s greatest rivalries.

NRL Chief Executive Dave Smith made the announcement in the Paddington Room in Suncorp Stadium – the venue which will host the 100th Origin game to be played on May 28.

Today’s event marked the official start of the countdown to the 100 Origin games celebration and also launched the NRL’s representative calendar for the 2014 season.

Past and present Queensland and NSW legends including Wally Lewis, current coach Mal Meninga, Mark Coyne, Steve Walters, Petero Civoniceva, Darren Lockyer, Justin Hodges, NSW great Steve Mortimer, Blues coach Laurie Daley and Paul Gallen were present for the announcement.

General public tickets for Origin I and III at Suncorp Stadium have been in hot demand since going on sale yesterday, with limited tickets remaining for each match.

Corporate hospitality and Maroon Memberships have been the biggest movers in 2014 sales.
