They say “better late than never” and that surely was the case when the second annual Nate Myles Cup was held over the weekend in Gordanvale.

CDJRL and Southern Suburbs Junior Rugby League Club had already been forced to cancel the Under 13 carnival earlier in the month due to the presence of Cyclone Ita.

In the 24-hour period prior to carnival 53mm of rain fell over Gordonvale, testing the nerves of Cup organisers. Come Saturday morning the grounds were wet and muddy but the sun was shining and the boys were keen and the carnival kicked off as planned at 8am.

 There two pools consisted of six teams;

Pool 1: Southern Suburbs, Redlynch Razobacks, Mareeba, Kangaroos, Innisfail Brothers and Central Scorpions.

Pool 2: Edmonton Storm, Ivanhoes, Mossman Sharks, Cairns Brothers, Tully and Eacham.

 The semi-finals saw Southern Suburbs take on Tully and Edmonton Storm battle with the Central Scorpions.

 The mighty Tully Tigers managed to gnaw their way into the grand final, However their determination was not enough to keep Edmonton at bay with Storm winning the cup, 20-10.

 Player of the Carnival: Jack Hayes (Southern Suburbs)

Player of the Grand Final: David Musemeci (Tully Tigers)

Referee of the Carnival: Rhiannon Dowling

Team Spirit Award: Southern Suburbs.

 With the late change in date of the Cup, namesake Nate Myles was unable to attend due to the Titans Sunday clash with the West Tigers.
