THE recent North Queensland Championships held in Townsville earlier this month were a great success.

All girls represented their schools and districts with pride and were a pleasure on and off the field.

This is something that will be growing over the next few years, both at the primary school and secondary school level. Well done to all the schools who entered teams at the Pat Bailey Plate earlier in the month.

Below is a report from the Cairns squads that took part:

Cairns District Junior Rugby League had five representative squads take part in the 2014 NQ Championships in Townsville.

The squads included Under 13, Under 14, Under 16, and our inaugural Under 16 girl’s squad.

The Under 16 girls went out hard and fast in their maiden match of the carnival, against Townsville.

The girls became affectionately known as the “Moorettes” and managed five tries and three conversions in their carnival opener. The girls won their match against Townsville 38-6.

Next game was against the Outback squad on Saturday afternoon. The Outback girls managed to get two tries on our girls, but the “Moorettes” were too strong and won the game 18-8.

The first final played on Sunday afternoon, was the Girls Under 16 match where the undefeated Cairns side played the Mackay squad.

The Cairns girls were so used to the taste of success, they ran away with the game in the inaugural Championship with a 20-0 win.

It was awesome to watch and have the girls participate in the Championships; the big hits out on the field were the talk of many of our male competitors.

Congratulations to these girls who made the NQ team who will be competing at the State Championships in Cairns next month.
