The talented Greenbank Under 10 team were this year’s winners of the Gorden Tallis Cup held in Townsville on July 12-13.

The popular event was run by the Townsville and District Junior Rugby League, with 51 teams participating.

QRL Northern Division chairman Scott Nosworthy said the carnival produced a string of quality junior games.

“It was by far the biggest crowd I have seen at a carnival in North Queensland in my 10 years working in the game of rugby league and the best thing about the whole weekend was that the event was played in great spirit,” Nosworthy said.

Greenbank played against the Kaiwalagal JRL from Thursday Island in the Torres Straits.

“You would have to look through the archives to see if a game has ever been played between two junior QRL teams from as far away from each other as these two,” Nosworthy said.

Greenbank scored six tries to two in an entertaining match.

“It was a fantastic achievement for both clubs to just be able to make it to the event and everyone should be congratulated for their fantastic efforts to give these children an opportunity to play the great game of rugby league in a fantastic carnival,” Nosworthy said.
