Unfortunately the sun didn’t shine for the Toowoomba Junior Rugby League semi-finals held in Pittsworth last Saturday, with the players forced to tough it out in difficult conditions of the occasional shower, wind and lots of mud.

Commiserations to those who scored the jerseys this week!

The under 11s were the first on the paddock with Dalby playing Highfields on the main field and winning their way in a tight one 10-6 to go straight to the grand final.

The other result now sees Highfields take on Souths in next week’s preliminary after they accounted for Pittsworth 26-0.

On the main field, first-placed Pittsworth Under 12’s continued their winning ways and showed why they will be hard to beat in the grand final after beating Souths 20-8.

Souths will get another chance next week against a talented Brothers outfit after they had a good semi win over Dalby 32-8.

Two great close games in the Under 11/12 Development Cup proved this concept is working well with Dalby heading to the grand final with a 22-20 win over a very determined Gatton side, who will no doubt be tough to beat next week when they take on Highfields who narrowly won over Brothers 14-10.

The excitement continued with two more close encounters when Souths defeated Highfields 16-12 in extra time on field one in the Under 13’s and Dalby were too good for Gatton in the knock-out semi 16-6 and will now face Highfields next week.

In the Under 14’s Souths were too good for Highfields 25-0 and will now have the week off while Highfields will face Valleys next Saturday who won 26-4 over Brothers on field two.

The under 13/14 Development Cup proved it will be here to stay with a close encounter on the main field between Valleys and Oakey which was unfortunately moved to field 2 when a player was injured and an ambulance was called.

Oakey had the lead before the move but to Valleys credit they dug deep in the final two minutes to take the game 18-14. Oakey will have another opportunity next week when they play Pittsworth who were too good for Dalby on the day taking the match 24-6.

Top of the ladder Valleys continued their winning way accounting for a determined Pittsworth side in the under 15’s. The score was locked up at 4-all for most of the match with Valleys sneaking away in the end 16-4 and will now move into the grand final.

Pittsworth will take on a very dangerous Brothers side who are coming home with a wet sail after taking care of a big Souths outfit 30-8.

Before the kickoff in the first Under 16 match the large crowd was asked to stand for a minute silence to pay tribute to Adam Schwerin, a fine young junior referee, who was tragically killed in a car accident last week. The under 16 Souths and Highfields boys then released 40 black and green balloons in his honour as a mark of respect.

The boys then got into the game with Highfields taking the victory and moving to next week’s prelims winning 22-6. To cap off a long day the final game was between minor premiers Pittsworth and the Valleys Roosters and it didn’t disappoint, probably being the toughest game of the day.

The conditions by this time were very wet and slippery and the boys from both teams dug deep. Valleys ended up grinding out 28-22 victory with Pittsworth having to back up next week against Highfields.

Watch this space for all the results next week when the Grand Final teams will be revealed.
