Brothers will meet Norths in the 2014 Ipswich Rugby League Mayor Paul Pisasale A-Grade Cup Grand Final after defeating Fassifern Bombers 22-16 on Sunday.

The first 10 minutes of the preliminary final were filled with errors and penalties from both Brothers and Fassifern.

Fassifern had the better territory and possession but Brothers defence kept numbering up and holding the Bombers out.

Brothers’ goal-line defence was like a brick wall and their scramble defence was excellent.

Despite Fassifern having the better territory for most of the first half, it was Brothers who opened the scoring through Damien West in the 24th minute.

The defences dominated the rest of the first-half and Brothers went into halftime leading 6-nil.

Only two minutes into the second-half Tasi Graff scored for Brothers after taking advantage of a massive overlap.

Brothers were in again shortly after Graff’s try when Jason Connors scored from a long-range attacking play to extend the Brethren’s lead to 14-0.

Brothers lost a player to the sin-bin for a professional-foul in the 48th minute and Fassifern made the most of the one-man advantage when Liam West and Harold Mosby scored for the Bombers, reducing Brothers’ lead to 14-12.

Fassifern’s goal-line defence began to look unbreakable until Brothers halfback Jason Connors scored from a quick-hands play from the Brethren in the 64th minute.

Brothers five-eighth Sam Krueger kicked a penalty goal in the 69th minute to extend Brothers’ lead to 22-12.

When Fassifern fullback Kieran Turner scored in the 71st minute a Bombers comeback looked to be on the cards.

Despite creating opportunities in the last nine minutes of the match Fassifern were not able to get the equalising try they needed and Brothers ran out winners 22-16 ending the Bombers’ season.

Brothers now progress to the Grand Final against Norths Tigers at the North Ipswich Reserve on Sunday, 14 September.
