Peter White says ensuring all of Gladstone's rugby league ranks remain in a good financial position will be his biggest task.
The newly appointed president of the Gladstone and District Rugby League said the financial challenge was a difficult one to address while trying to keep all stakeholders happy.
"The thing that keeps coming up is the lack of revenue," he said.
"All sports clubs are incurring increased costs. Water rates, electricity and insurance are big ones.
"They keep adding up and we will focus strongly on that."
White has been involved with the GRL for 11 years and feels now is the right time for him to step into the top job.
He has been involved with rugby league since his childhood, and said his experiences on and off the field had helped foster a love for the game.
White, who has lived in Gladstone for 31 years, is also devoted to the local competition and is determined to make it as good as it can be.
"I am passionate about rugby league and have been for a long time," he said.
"I have been secretary and an independent director for GRL.
"I feel it is time to play a more visible role."
Part of the role will be helping to deliver to Gladstone the best possible rugby league stage.
The plan is to do that for spectators and also offer the right development pathways for up-and-coming players.
"I am keen to work with the juniors too," White said.
"We should look at about the same amount of Capras games too. We will seek sponsor support for that.
"We need to perform too and offer them value for money."
