The junior rugby league 2015 club season kicked off on the weekend of May 2-3 with boys and girls from 5-years-old throughout the region taking the field to play with their club.

The Cairns District Junior Rugby League welcomed two new clubs with Babinda and Innisfail Cowboys, both fielding Under 12 teams, into the Cairns District competition in 2015.

Innisfail District junior Under 11 - Under 16 clubs teams compete in the Cairns competition with Under 6 - Under 10 playing in the local Cassowary Coast region.

Babinda JRL President Clinton Henrich said the club has experienced a marked increase in player registrations with the club fielding an Under 12 team for the first time in many years.

“We are a great little club and it is very rewarding to have the growth in player numbers this year,” he said.

“We have a great team of volunteers and are looking forward to the season ahead.”

Cairns & District Junior Rugby League Chairman Glenn Budge said it is a challenging process compiling a junior competition with 15 clubs stretching from Mossman to the north, west to Mareeba and south to Tully participating in the League.

“Over 2000 children play rugby league each week in the Cairns District competition and it is a credit to club volunteers’ commitment to the game that we can provide a competition of this stature,” he said.

“NRL Game Development staff have facilitated coaches, sports trainers, referees and admin courses leading into the season ensuring our officials have the most up to date skills and support for their roles.

“It is extremely rewarding volunteering in junior sport and encourage anyone who would like to become involved with their local junior club to contact the League or QRL office for details.

“We have a number of smaller clubs, including the newly established White Rock JRL and the Yarrabah Seahawks Juniors who will welcome volunteers to help grow their clubs.”

Girls and boys wanting to play still have the opportunity to register for the 2015 season and can find their local club online at http://www.playnrl.com
